Bio-consulting at The Clinic
There are many practitioners describing themselves as Holistic nowadays, and an increasing number that purport to use the SMART technique when removing mercury amalgams. However, to be IAOMT Holistically Accredited and SMART-Certified requires much time and study and the undertaking of IAOMT examinations – hard work. As one of very few UK dentists to have gone through this, patients can rest assured that Jeff is officially qualified.
Jeff accepts Accreditation award in Las Vegas
After having absorbed over 130 oral medicine and toxicology papers and taken numerous interim exams, I underwent a final Zoom viva examination by five Florida health professionals in September 2023. Despite the stress of five-second time lag, I was delighted to pass and become one of only three IAOMT-Accredited dentists in the UK. My reward was a trip to Las Vegas to receive the award from very friendly bunch of people.

Scavenger employed
Jeff uses the state-of-the-art IQAir FlexVac scavenger to ensure that your mercury amalgams are removed in a completely safe and non-toxic environment.
Practice installs oxygen mask
Inhaling mercury amalgam dust is even more hazardous than ingesting it, because mercury is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream from the lungs. That is why we never remove these fillings at The Clinic without first placing an oxygen nose mask for your protection.
2002 New surgery opens
The new surgery opened at the turn of the year 2002. I was the first occupant and this meant that I could set up the surgery exactly how I wanted. I bought the best equipment on the market, including an Erbium Yag laser and full digital X-ray equipment (the first in Brighton). Naturally, I vowed that the only mercury entering the surgery would be that in patients’ existing amalgam fillings.
New purpose-built surgery
By chance, I came across a newbuild live-work development in the North Laine area of Brighton. Most dental surgeries are located on older houses – not purpose-built and hard to clean. The streamlined property in Gloucester Yard was ideal in terms of functionality, hygiene and location.
Leaves NHS to become a private practitioner
I had now realised that going mercury-free entailed becoming a Private practitioner. The NHS did not allow composite fillings to be placed in back teeth and this was problematic in that I had therefore to mix NHS and Private treatment to be mercury-free. I duly terminated my NHS contract and began to look for new surgery premises in Brighton.
Plans a mercury-safe practice
It was becoming clear to me that it was going to be impossible (ideologically and practically) to continue mercury-free in the mixed, multi-surgery practice in which I was a partner. None of the other dentists in the building shared my concerns, and I encountered the usual justifications (cost-effectiveness, ease of use, insignificance of mercury danger) when I raised the subject.
Rubber dam
I started using rubber dam routinely in 1995. This was partly because composite fillings require perfect moisture isolation to work but, also, I felt instinctively that isolating the oropharynx from mercury amalgam particles from old fillings was a good idea. This was many years before the SMART protocol was formulated by the IAOMT.
Dr Jeff Amos goes mercury-free
I stopped using mercury amalgam in 1992 – not because I had read the scientific papers on its dangers that were starting to be published, but because I had never forgotten my physics teacher telling me not to mess about with the stuff in class. Which was exactly what I felt we dentists were doing. When placing or removing a mercury filling, globules of the liquid metal and airborne dust particles seemed to end up everywhere – down the patient’s throat, up the suction tubing, sometimes on the floor. This was the first step towards opening Brighton’s first mercury-safe, Holistic dental practice.
Dr Jeff Amos
I’ve had excellent treatment to remove several amalgam fillings, a dodgy crown, and an infected tooth. He is a top class dentist with years of professional experience using the safest procedures for amalgam removal. He is brilliant at giving injections with minimal discomfort! He is patient and kind, and willing to explain all about the treatment he is doing. Thank you, Jeff, for your dedicated work!
I saw Jeff for the first time towards the end of 2024 as I needed root canal treatment. I've never had any problems with my teeth before, and recently received very poor treatment from another private local dentist, so I was quite apprehensive, but I needn't have worried. Jeff and everyone at The Clinic made me feel so comfortable and at ease. He very kindly looked at my X rays before I even booked an appointment, and gave his opinion and recommendations for treatment without any charge or obligation. After my first consultation, I knew instantly that I was in safe hands. As well as being compassionate and understanding, Jeff is clearly very knowledgeable and an expert at his craft. I can't recommend him highly enough. Both the treatment and aftercare are outstanding. If you are looking for a dentist, don't hesitate. Thank you so much! 😊
Recently I had a series of treatments with Jeff after doing much research myself to find a dentist who I could trust to carry out treatment with my allergy issues. All other dentists I had spoken to were reluctant to carry out any dental treatment including the NHS dental hospital I was seeing because of my allergy issues. But Jeff so kindly agreed to do the treatment despite the risks, and I can honestly say that within weeks it as set me on the path to getting my health back. The strong metallic taste and Ionic electric charge I was experiencing coming from my teeth as completely gone and the tinnitus I had as subsided substantially. The brain fog I was suffering with for years as also gone following the removal of my mercury fillings.
There was also a metal plate in my mouth under a dental crown that I had no idea was there, but when I sent Jeff dental x-rays I had done he immediately pointed out the plate. But three other dentists did not tell me it was there although I was known to have metal allergies. Jeff pointed this out as a possible causative factor in some of the symptoms I was getting so on the first appointment he safely removed it. Following analysis of the metal plate it was found to have the metals I was allergic to in it.
Jeff is the best dentist I have ever been to, from the painless injections to ensuring that nothing I was allergic to was used in the procedure. He also took time out of his busy schedule to look at all the information I sent him before treatment regarding my allergies.
Before, during and after the treatment Jeff and Rosie were reassuring checking I was okay. After the treatment it was like nothing had been done, no soreness and I recovered the next day. Rosie was wonderful she was calm, kind and attentive throughout again best dental nurse I've met. Beverly and Janine were lovely to checking up with a call after each treatment. I traveled 400 miles round trip each time for treatment but I can t recommend the clinic enough. 5 stars without a doubt.
The fillings were replaced with Venus Pearl fillings, which are BPA-free. This was also important to me as there are only a few composite fillings which are BPA-free, Venus Pearl being one of them.
The entire practice team is so friendly and accommodating, it was a very positive experience. I only wish I lived closer so that Jeff could be my regular dentist.
Desperate for a solution, I booked an appointment with Dr. Jeff Amos and traveled to see him. Dr. Amos carefully removed the problematic fillings and skillfully replaced them with Venus Pearl fillings. Within 5-6 days, my body began to recover, and I started feeling significantly better.
Dr. Amos has truly saved my health. His expertise, kindness, and care ensured that I did not experience any pain during the treatment. I felt extremely safe and secure under his care, which is something I have not found with any other dentist. His compassionate approach made a significant difference in my overall experience.
Despite the need to travel, I highly recommend Dr. Amos, and for me, it was well worth the effort. He has successfully resolved issues that other dentists could not, and I am deeply grateful for his skill, knowledge, and kindness.
Case examples
Spot the filling

I think even another dentist would struggle to identify the filling in this premolar.
Mercury vapour

Another amalgam giving off mercury vapour and weakening the tooth. The new composite filling is both safe and remedial.
Typical stress cracks

Years of driving this mercury amalgam into the tooth through chewing had resulted in typical stress-cracks. These were repaired with non-toxic composite when the filling was replaced, creating a much stronger unit.
Cracked mercury amalgam

Though I say it myself, this tooth is beautifully restored after replacement of the large, cracked mercury amalgam with a Venus Pearl composite filling.
Beautiful ceramic work

Sometimes a tooth is so dilapidated that only a crown will restore it properly. Beautiful ceramic work here from our technician John Donno.
Conservative dentistry

It is not essential to run out every stained fissure in a tooth – doing so might weaken it unnecessarily. Irrespective, it was good to see these teeth brighten up considerably after their mercury amalgams had been removed safely.
Less than an hour to replace these mercury amalgams

It took less than an hour to replace these mercury amalgams – even using the SMART technique. The Venus Pearl fillings are not only non-toxic and great looking, but they will also prevent further cracking.
Two compromised teeth

Two compromised teeth, one with a large mercury amalgam that was removed using the SMART protocol, beautifully restored. Both the patient and I were delighted with the result.
Venus Pearl filling a cheaper and more secure alternative

This porcelain inlay was leaking at the margins. The replacement restoration is not a new inlay but a Venus Pearl filling – a cheaper and more secure alternative.
Two mercury amalgams in a row

There is something very satisfying about replacing two mercury amalgams in a row.
Beautiful biomorphic Venus Pearl composite

Another old mercury amalgam that is breaking down at the edges, cracking the tooth and releasing mercury vapour. Replaced using the SMART technique with a beautiful, biomorphic Venus Pearl composite.
Amalgam replacement using the SMART technique

Another mercury amalgam replacement using the SMART technique. As well as emitting mercury vapour, this old filling is leaking at the margins, thereby creating an uncleanable ditch around it. The replacement Venus Pearl composite is not only non-toxic and sealed to the tooth, it looks infinitely better.
Mercury amalgam in tooth with multiple cracks

This tooth shows the multiple cracks that invariably appear when mercury amalgam is used as a restorative material. As you might imagine, it does not bond to the tooth in any way and therefore acts as a stress-wedge. Contrast with our replacement composite filling , which combines beautifully with the remaining tooth structure and is non-toxic, supportive and aesthetic.
Composite filling shaped by hand

Not so long ago, I would have used porcelain to restore this fractured premolar containing a mercury amalgam. Thanks to recent technical advances, however, I was able to restore the tooth using a simple, less expensive, composite filling shaped by hand.
